In several short weeks, the 2014 CrossFit Games season will commence with the Open, a multi-week competition designed to test your fitness and determine who is worthy to move on to the Regional competitions and eventually the CrossFit Games themselves.
Not a single person at CrossFit 818 will make it to the CrossFit Games this year. If I had to assign a percentage chance, it would be 0.00%. I am as confident in this prognostication as I am in saying the sun will rise tomorrow morning. And yet, I strongly encourage every single one of you to participate in the Open.
You many be asking yourself, "Whhhaaaaat?!" Why should you participate in the Open, when your own coach is absolutely certain you will not make it??? Easy. The journey is more important than the destination. While the end result of the Open is to find the few men and women capable and worthy of attending the Games, the process lends itself to be tremendously useful to you in testing your fitness against the world, your peers, and, perhaps most importantly, against yourself. Yes, you are going in knowing that you have no chance. But that does not mean your time will be wasted. In fact, you will likely get more out of the Open than any of the athletes that do qualify for Regionals or even later on the Games.
The Open will be very difficult for you. It will challenge the limits of your fitness, and it will teach you something about your weaknesses, strengths, and your willpower. You will likely be physically and emotionally drained by the end of it. And you will have absolutely nothing tangible to show for it... but for the rest of your life you will have the knowledge that you undertook an impossible task, gave it everything you had, and learned something about yourself you never would have had you decided to protect yourself from disappointment or hurt because you knew the tangible end result before you began.
