A couple people have asked me over the last week or so to make them a hand protector with tape before a workout to avoid making a callus or blister worse. I wrote the blog below last year and figured it would be a good idea to rehash it and remind everyone that your hands should be kept in as good a shape as the rest of your body. Check it out:
Hand care. Not the most interesting topic, but it's definitely an important one. As CrossFitters we have all had run-ins with calluses, blisters and cuts on your hands. A couple weeks ago I started a weightlifting program that Armen wrote for me. This was my first experience using the hook grip for dozens of reps at a time. By the end of the first day my hands (specifically my thumbs) felt like I had dragged a cheese grater against them for an hour. There are a couple tricks that you can use to make sure that minor injuries to your hands don't prevent you from working out. In addition to keeping your hands clean it helps to use hand balm (not hand lotion), exfoliating calluses with an Emory board or pumice stone and taping properly if you get a blister. I found this video on taking care of your hands by Donny Shankle - he is a total badass, if he takes care of his hands so should you!
