This week I want to direct your attention to an unbelievable story of one man's recovery from a catastrophic injury through the use of Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength Program. This is the story of Brian Jones, an insurance adjuster who was told that he would probably never walk again after he sustained two pilon fractures from a twenty foot fall off of a rooftop in 2011. Two years later Brian totaled 1093 pounds at a powerlifting meet. The road from injury to recovery was fraught with challenges that are unimaginable to many of us. Improvements were made in the minute quantities of inches and ounces. The takeaway is obvious: there is a way out, no matter how dire the situation so long as you do not give up. The full story can be read here.
“You have to be patient with yourself and your body when you are doing something like this. However, don’t confuse patience with accepting anything less than your best effort for that day. Always push yourself. Always make a difference. Never cheat yourself out of the opportunity to improve. We all have a limited amount of days to do this. Use them. I have no doubt that anyone who gets their mind right can accomplish, achieve, and surpass the results that I have seen. Injuries or inactivity with bones and muscles may be the reason you are where you are – your head and your heart control where you can go and what you will be.”
AA is determined not to let anything stop him.
