_ When did you first start CrossFitting? I had never heard of CrossFit prior to my first visit to Crossfit 818 back in June 2011.
When did you first start training at CF 818? Second week of June. June 08, 2011 to be exact.
Tell us about your sports and fitness background: I have had no sports background ever; throughout my school years and as an adult sports had never really interested me. So, as a kid I was chubby and then went from chubby to fat as an adult.
In my late twenties is when I finally got fed up with my weight problem and I started jogging and changed my eating habits. I lost between 40-50 lbs in a year! Then as time passed and life went on, I got lazy and found some of that weight I had lost.
Then a neighbor and a couple of other mutual friends started hitting the gym together.
We have been doing it for a couple of years now (off and on). Although weight had been discarded not much was changing as far as strength and conditioning, that is until now that I have been crossfitting for a few months! Now even more weight has been discarded and I am growing stronger and stronger day by day.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD...what was it, and how did it feel? My first encounter with CrossFit was on my way to have lunch. I walked by the box and thought about it while I was having my meal. So I decided to go in on my way back to work and see what it was all about. That is when I first met the awesome coach Chris Mello. There was something different about the feel I got from this place and the coach based on the questions he had for me when I was inquiring about the box. After our chat, I also did some internet research on CrossFit and asked some friends if they had heard of it. From some of the videos and comments I saw I was excited about it. I knew I was not doing the correct things at my gym and that is why I wasn’t getting the results I was looking for.
My official first WOD after the baseline was “J.I. Jane” 100 burpee pull ups.
Being that I couldn’t do a single pull up when I started I thought this is not possible. How will I even do the work out? That is the great thing about CrossFit , they have solutions to these problems. They scaled the work out to jumping pull ups. Well it took me over 19 minutes to finish, but I finished! I was soaked in sweat and it took me several minutes to catch my breath. I enjoyed the intensity of the WOD! The rush of adrenaline and the feeling of accomplishment is what keeps me coming back for more.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)?: I don’t believe my body has looked this good ever! It is continuously changing; muscles are more defined and increasing in mass. So much so, that I am thinking of having a “Welcome Home” party for my abs! LOL =)
I enjoy having so much more energy, stamina and endurance. I still continue to work out with my buddies at my regular gym and they comment on how I have gained more strength and on the physical changes they see.
From the coaches, I have acquired knowledge on proper form and technique and also lots of support and encouragement. I can now see what I was doing wrong and/or not doing, that I wasn’t seeing from my years of working out at the gym.
What sort of change in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected? Although I used to think I was not very competitive, I now find myself being very much competitive with my fellow crossfitters (although they might not know it) and especially myself. I see the potential in me and I will do my best to achieve it. I can’t believe that I look forward to working out at CF818 everyday! So much so, that I went from a 3 x a week membership to 4 x a week and now thinking about going unlimited. I even got my very own box made so that I can do box jumps at home.
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CF 818 moments: One of my favorite memories is when I attended the CF Games this year and got to see and meet some of the competitors. Especially the women; they kicked ass! These women were lifting more weight than I can right now. Everyone was cheering everyone on. The sense of unity was awesome. This is the same feeling I get out of CF818.
Any advice for people just getting started? I would ask people to think about those that may depend on you and what would happen if you weren’t able to be there for them. My 2 year old son is my ultimate motivator. He depends on me for everything and I will make sure I will be there for him. Who better to take care of you than you?
Not sure who wrote the following but it motivates me as well.
“As you choose to empower yourself - the temptation that you challenge will surface again and again -- Each time that you challenge it you gain power and it loses power”
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? I enjoy the outdoors; hiking, mountain biking and riding my ATV. With CrossFit I can do these activities with much more ease.
