Continuing on our Olympic Weightlifting kick: One of the most common things I hear when women see a couple of guys lifting weights in a CrossFit workout at CrossFit 818 is "well I don't want to get big, I just want to get toned".
Ladies this post is for you! First, a couple things about women and muscles: Did you know that after the age of 30, the average woman loses almost a pound of muscle a year for the rest of their lives? The easiest way for women to ensure they avoid getting osteoporosis is to have enough lean muscle in order to stimulate the body to maintain the bone density to support that muscle. Women generally can't get big from lifting weights alone because they lack the levels of testosterone necessary to produce huge muscles. Those female bodybuilders look that way due to performance enhancing drugs (including steroids and testosterone). And finally, the most important reason why to include weightlifting in your daily regimen? Because it burns fat like nothing else!
Check out 53kg (117lb) German Olympian Julia Rohde below... while she didn't medal, she certainly lifted a lot of weight with an 85kg (187lb) Snatch and a 108kg (238lb) Clean & Jerk!
