Sometimes, we don't reach our goals or our expectations of a certain outcome aren't met... Recently one of our members expressed some frustration and disappointment with a recent outcome and Armen's response touched me so much that I have to share it here. Take this to heart!
It can be really frustrating to put so much effort into something just for it not to meet your expectations. But the issue isn't with your performance, because you did improve a ton. And it's not in how you felt during and after the race, because you said it felt a lot better than the first 5k did.
So where's the frustration coming from? It seems like the frustration is stemming from this idea that just because someone else improved more than you it means you didn't try hard enough or you didn't give it your all when that's not the case at all. You did give it your all; in fact you were one of the only people who were there every single week and improved every single week. Just because someone else improved more (relatively) than you did, doesn't mean your hard work is meaningless.
I used to get really frustrated when I compared myself with other CrossFitters (okay...I still do occasionally, but I'm working on it!). That frustration stems from really similar thoughts: what else could I possibly do? How much harder can I work?
The thing is, there's always someone who will do what we do better, faster, and more gracefully. That's just the cards we were dealt. What matters most though isn't how we do compared to everyone else. What matters is that when we made the choice that this endeavor would be a priority, we did it with integrity; we stuck with our training, we worked as hard as we could, we took care of ourselves, we always kept our priorities in line, and when it was time for game day we gave it our all. What's important, and what should really decide if you're happy with yourself, is if you've competed to the best of your abilities.
So you gave 100%, and barely missed your mark. Have you noticed how much easier you're squatting in class and how much more weight you've been using recently? Because I have! Have you felt better during the workouts? Because you sure look like you're more comfortable! These are all big wins and you should be proud of them. It's okay to get frustrated, but give yourself a few hours then get over it and move on because there's always gonna be something else that's gonna challenge you and require your full positive attention!
