Grit

You regularly get to read about CrossFit and fitness, in general, from the perspective of your coaches, but today's blog is from the perspective of one your fellow members: Edwin Belen. Thanks Edwin!

Grit by Merriam-Webster dictionary is:  firmness of mind or spirit:  unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger.

Grit defined by researchers that were trying to find key factors in determining whether students at West Point graduated or dropped out is as follows:  tendency to work strenuously toward challenges, maintaining effort and interest over years despite failure, adversity and plateaus in progress.  What these researchers found is that grit was the one key factor that determined success at West Point.  Further, this key factor (also called a keystone habit) created a culture - such as a daily gathering of like-minded friends - to help find the strength to overcome obstacles.  Sound familiar?

I don't believe that CrossFit is nearly as difficult as graduating West Point.  My message is that the one factor that can predict success at West Point is very similar to things we feel, live through and talk about when we discuss CrossFit - maintaining effort and interest despite failure, adversity and plateaus.  Further, community is probably the one factor in my opinion that keeps me going to CrossFit.  Even though I can take what I've learned the past year and do many of the movements without coming to our box, it is the challenge and pressure I feel to try my best when working out next to each member of 818.

What is your key factor that keeps you coming back to CrossFit?

Sound off in the comments below!

Don't forget CrossFit 818 Yoga is in full swing, and our new instructor Amanda knows exactly how to mobilize, unwind, and unglue your muscles and joints to prep you for the coming week of CrossFit. Come on in (Sunday at 11:45am) and give it try!
